This lively, well-illustrated alternative history of painting reexamines the accepted ideas about fine art painting. It broadens the scope of painting from works on paper and canvas to include painted ceramics, stained glass. textiles. This history of Western painting is often reduced to the story of a tiny elite bunch of easel pictures, composed exclusively of old masters and avant-garde works. Three-dimensional objects, watercolors, miniatures, icons, and non-Western works, as well as modern paintings that are no longer perceived as "cutting edge," relate uneasily to this twin canon of old and modern masters. This new, richly illustrated account seeks to redress the balance by exploring the wider history of painting and including a broad range of painted works (often excluded as belonging to the realm of applied or decorative art) from stained glass to painted ceramics, furniture, textiles, and items of costume.

Montclair

The Montclair area began its history as a camp for a band of Native Americans known as the Serrano Indians. After Spaniards settled California in the 1700s, the territory served as a watering stop for travelers along the Juan Bautista de Anza Trail. In 1897, the Township of Marquette was established--though renamed Monte Vista in the early 1900s--and the area then developed as a farming community for the citrus industry. After World War I, a housing and population boom transformed the town into a bedroom community, which incorporated in 1956 as the City of Monte Vista. In 1958, the community changed its name to Montclair after the U.S. Postal Service imposed mail delivery restrictions because of a conflict with another town in Northern California. Today Montclair serves its residents and the region as a transportation hub, as a leader in commercial and retail development, and by its proximity to several colleges and universities. Montclair

Butterfield 8 (Full Frame, Widescreen)

Lots of men knew her number. No one knew her heart. Gloria Wondrous awakens in a luxurious bedroom that's not hers. She swallows a jolt of distilled courage, tosses aside $250 left by an admirer, leaves a scornful reply in lipstick on the mirror, dials her service for messages and slips into a mink coat she finds in a closet. The day and the movie are off to a roaring start. Moviegoers and Hollywood left a message of "Hurrah!" for Elizabeth Taylor and "Butterfield 8." Audiences made the film, co-starring Laurence Harvey and Eddie Fisher as married lover and platonic friend who matter to Gloria, a box-office hit. And Taylor won her first Best Actress Academy Award as the call girl whose life comes with a complete set of emotional baggage. For a glossy, good time, don't call. Watch. The Beast in the Garden

The true tale of an edenic Rocky Mountain town and what transpired when a predatory species returned to its ancestral home. When, in the late 1980s, residents of Boulder, Colorado, suddenly began to see mountain lions in their yards, it became clear that the cats had repopulated the land after decades of persecution. Here, in a riveting environmental fable that recalls Peter Benchley's thriller JAWS, journalist David Baron traces the history of the mountain lion and chronicles Boulder's effort... home garden The Painted World: From Illumination to Abstraction The Beast in the Garden home garden The Painted World: From Illumination to Abstraction The Beast in the Garden
